- Curator's comments
- This watercolour drawing is one of three works by Henry Stanier in the British Museum’s collection, all depicting Egyptian views (for further information, see the curatorial comment on his view of Karnak, 1994,U.10; the other view is of Thebes 1994,U.9). The present drawing depicts a street scene in the old city of Cairo. This type of view became fashionable in the nineteenth century when a growing tourism industry brought an influx of Western travellers to the city. Similar views were published as lithographs in 1846-49 by the Scottish painter David Roberts (1796-1864), who had visited Cairo ten years earlier. Particularly his views of ‘Bullak, Cairo’ or of the ‘Mosque of El Mooristan, Cairo’ closely resemble Stanier’s works and may have been known to the younger artist.
