- Lit: James Dafforne, (1853), 'British Artists: Their Style and Character No. LXII John Absolon', 'Art Journal', pp.201-3; 'That very interesting entertainment called 'The Overland Mail', which had so long a 'run' at the Gallery of Illustration, was the joint production of and property of Messrs. Absolon, Grieve, and [William] Telbin; to the first of these three artists was allotted chiefly the task of painting the figures in the landscapes' (p.203).
