  • Curator's comments

Bent Sørensen kindly identified the sitter as Rolin Burin (d. 1662), Ecuyer, Seigneur Châtelain d'Yerres & de la Grange du Milieu, Seigneur de Brezons et de Brunoy. Four years after the date of this portrait, on 30 September 1654, he would be appointed Conseiller secrétaire du roi and, in November 1657, he would become Conseiller du Roy en ses Conseils and Grand-Audiencier de France. The present drawing may have been related to the preparation of an engraving, although no known print survives. The inscription records that the drawing was given as a gift by Burin to his 'most beloved sister'.
