- Curator's comments
- This brisk drawing of a young man was connected by Sutton (1946) to Watteau's painting "Charmes de la vie" (c1717; Wallace Collection), where the head is used for one of the subsidiary figures. The painting was later etched in reverse by Pierre Aveline (D.V.183). The vigorous, loose strokes of chalk give the drawing an air of spontaneity, suggesting it was quickly made from life.
