What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Copy after a drawing now in the Musée Bonnat, Bayonne (138).

    Popham 1967
The colouring and paper of this very accurate facsimile resemble those of the Arundel copies. The original, formerly in the Spencer and Esdaile collections and now in the Musée Bonnat at Bayonne (138; Bean, no. 88), may be connected with the composition referred to as 'Christ healing the sick' (see 1905,1110.19). It was etched by A. van der Borcht, with the number "28" engraved in the r. bottom corner (B.M. 1851,0308.853) and later by Stephen Slaughter [in reverse] in 1733 with a dedication to Dr. Hickman in whose collection it then was (B.M. 1851,0308.880[-3; 1874,0808.1019; 1867,0308.882]).
