  • Curator's comments

The traditional attribution to Annibale was sometimes replaced by an attribution to Agostino, but in recent Carracci scholarship it has been assigned to Annibale. Daniele Benati has suggested that the prelate at the lower right is a caricature of Giovanni Battista Agucchi, but this seems unlikely as it does not resemble his portrait in the York City Art Gallery that is sometimes thought to be by Annibale (no. VIII.13 in the Bologna/ Rome catalogue).

A comparable sheet of studies was offered for sale at Sotheby's, New York, 28 January 2009, lot 82. Lit.: M. Clarke and N. Penny, in exhib. cat., Manchester, Whitworth Art Gallery , 'The arrogant connoisseur: Richard Payne Knight ; 1751-1824', 1982, no. 120 (with incorrect registration number as Agostino Carracci); J. Wood, 'Padre Resta as a collector of Carracci Drawings', "Master Drawings", XXXIV, I, 1996, n. 87 and 245, fig. 8; C. Robertson and C. Whistler, in exhib. cat., Oxford, Ashmolean Museum and London, Hazlitt, Gooden and Fox, 'Drawings by the Carracci from British collections', 1996, no. 71; D. De Grazia, 'Carracci drawings in Britain and the state of Carracci studies', "Master Drawings", XXXVI, Fall 1998, p. 300 (as Agostino Carracci); D. Benati in exhib. cat., Bologna, Museo Civico Archeologico and Rome, Chiostro del Bramante, 'Annibale Carracci', 2006, no. VIII.11 (with further literature)
