    Literature: Ger Luijten, Peter Schatborn, and Arthur Wheelock Jr., Drawing for Paintings in the Age of Rembrandt (National Gallery of Art, Washington and Fondation Custodia, Paris) 2017, no. 10 in exhibition guide (not in exhibition catalogue).

    This is a study for a signed and dated painting, sold at Christie's New York, 4 June 2014 (lot 16) and for sale with Richard Green Fine Paintings ('Important Old Master Paintings', 2015 catalogue, no.13 including extensive provenance); which was until 1936 in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, inv.no.1399; then in the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal. A copy is now in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden, inv.no.1399.

    This is one of around 45 drawings preserved by Netscher.
