  • Description

    Garter of the Order of the Garter; dark blue velvet with motto formed of applied gold letters enamelled in red and white; gold buckle and tongue enamelled white with green and white pattern on the sides and green enamel on the reverse (damaged). The buckle set with seventeen diamonds, the tongue with eleven. The attachment holes formed of gold rosettes enamelled red and white. The whole bordered with gold chain and edged with silver thread formed of wound silver strip; in the spaces, small rosettes made of coiled silver wire.

    In set with 1980,0201.1-3
    One of a set of Collar, Great George, Lesser George and Garter believed to have been made for William Compton, 1st Earl of Northampton, created KG 1628, installed 1629.

    The velvet is probably a later replacement and has a modern purple lining on the reverse.
