Text from Frances Carey & Antony Griffiths, 'The Print in Germany 1880-1933', BM 1984, no. 200 :
This and the following lithographs were made for publication in the first of the Bauhaus portfolios, devoted to the work of the masters teaching there. Both were printed in the Bauhaus printing workshop, and both were produced by a curious tracing technique that Klee had first devised in 1919. It enabled him to reuse his drawings for prints by tracing them through a sort of hand-made 'carbon' paper onto ordinary lithographic transfer paper; from this the design was transferred to the stone for printing in the usual way. This tracing process is responsible for the blurred line and random background grain that distinguishes these prints; in this they are somewhat reminiscent of Gauguins' traced monotypes. Klee later extended his use of this technique to make drawings and watercolours (sometimes referred to in the Klee literature as 'oil-transfer paintings'). An interesting discussion of the subject by Jim M. Jordon is published in the 1983 Bard College exhibition catalogue, pp. 87-105. The original drawing (work number 1921/158) is in the collection of E.W. Kornfeld in Bern (no. 82c of the 1974 Duisburg catalogue).
