What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Condition

The object was overall in a stable condition although its innate structural problem - namely flexing plant fibre structure makes it difficult to transport and work around. The surface was dusty. One moth casing was found. Some slightly loosened/misplaced binding cord present although that did not seem to compromise overall structure.

    Treatment details

The surface was cleaned using brush and vacuum. Both ends of the boat were supported using acid-free tissue and Jiffy foam (polyehylene). Moth casing was removed mechanically using a wooden stick.
