One of six irregular leaf-shaped silk and linen (or hemp) fragments from a seal-case; Weft-faced compound 1:2, Z twill, 3 lats; Decorated with geometric motifs in red, yellow and white on a brown ground; Lozenges and lobed squares originally repeating about every 14cm lengthways and every 10cm widthways; Main warp: brown linen /hemp, Z spun S ply, c.13-14 paired tpc; Binding warp: Z twist, S ply, c.13-14 single tpc; Weft: silk, no twist, c.39 passes pc; Edges: cut; Sewing: seams from seal bags (threads cut) and overcasting attaching linen lining

- Previous location Cupboard 64, blue box; Sections of lining on pieces 20 and 31 date from a use prior to the final one as seal bag; The original form of the bag is not certain, the six pieces may have been sewn together to make a roughly spherical shape; The bag had already been unpicked and taken to pieces at the time of their accession; Fibres of warp examined under high mag and confirmed as plant fibre, but possibly hemp rather than linen; Information from Hero Granger-Taylor (13.3.1990)
