What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

  • Description

    Fragment of undyed linen with an eight pointed tapestry motif. Extending on two sides into narrow bands, purple-coloured wool, detailed in undyed linen. Motif has a central field of four vases arranged with leaves within a roundel. Square frame with twisted border design, additional four points each filled with a leaf. Complete band of connecting leaves, ends in an urn. "Coptic".
    Materials: linen, wool; Techniques: simple tabby, tapestry on grouped warp threads, wrapped float brocading; Warp: linen, S-spin, c. 22 ends per cm; Weft: linen and wool, S-spin, c. 12 picks per cm in plain areas, c. 40 cm in tapestry; Edges: cut or fragmentary; Sewing: none.

    Textile fragment of undyed linen; with woven panel in dark purple wool in the shape of an eight-pointed star and square in the centre filled by a circle; a running scroll issues from two opposite points and terminates in a drop in the shape of an urn.
