What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

  • Curator's comments

    Yang Chialing, SOAS; on 16 July, 2007: the painting was started by Ren Yu and the Master of the Cold Fragrance, Jin xin lan. They didn't finish it, and Jin xin lan asked Lu Hui to complete it. The title-page is by Wu Changshi, the inscription on the painting is by Ren Lizan and the final colophon is by Wang Zhen
