    Part of the Hans Sloane founding collection. Acquired by Sloane from Colonel Francis Nicholson (1655-1728), Governor of South Carolina, 1721-1725. Original register entry reads "A large Carolina basket made by the Indians of splitt canes some parts of them being dyed red by the fruit of the Solanum magnum Virginianum racemosum rubrum & black. They will keep any thing in this from being wetted by rain. From Coll. Nicholson Governor of South Carolina whence he brought them."
