Registration slip description:
Cover for the shoulders with cords at the four corners. Made of fibre with cross stitchings in parallel lines.
7 July 1995
Reason for treatment
Clean and remove moth remains. Straighten.
Surface very dirty with 'museum' dust. Moth remains present, though no moth damage as the fibres are cellulosic. Severe folding.
Loose dirt and moth remains removed from surface using a soft brush, tweezers, and low powered vacuum cleaner fitted with a flexible rubber hose. Cleaned with Groomstick (modified natural rubber) gently rolled over the contaminated surface. Examined surface under magnification to check for disturbance or fibre loss; all appeared OK. Relaxed by humidifying above a layer of Goretex. A piece of blotting paper was sprayed with distilled water, then covered with the Goretex, the object and a layer of polythene sheeting and allowed to humidify. The object was aligned when fully relaxed. Allowed to dry using glass weights where necessary.
