Reason for treatment
Clean if necessary. Note loose red ochre stains. Examine and repair weak areas.
Slightly dirty. Some red ochre stains. Few damaged areas.
Surface cleaned using brush and vacuum suction. Attempted removal of stains using Groomstick (modified natural rubber) but only slightly successsful. Also test-cleaned most dirty area with Groomstick. Not effective. Smoothed down loose fibres in damaged areas with sodium alginate and arrowroot starch paste, diluted 50:50 in distilled water, applied with a fine brush. N.B. Damaged areas not in immediate danger of unravelling further. Repairs not undertaken.
