mask / figure
Fish-shaped figure (forming part of a mask ?), made of turtle-shell, wood, vegetable fibre string. Broken in three, with piece of string loose.
Found apparently unregistered in Ethnography Department Oceania collections. Stuck-on circular label, handwritten "Torres Strait. A.W.Franks Esq. 9.11.70. K[ennett]." Marked in pencil "Mt.Ernest or Mulgrave Id." This is same type of object, provenance and source of acquisition as Christy 6928, of which it appears to be a "duplicate" (or "similar") not registered at the time. See Christy Collection "Additions, 1868-1877" temporary Register, pp.127-128, where 6928 is mentioned but not the 1998,Q piece. (AMD,11/1998). Compare with Oc.6928
