The Parthenon Sculptures
Description
Marble statue from the West pediment of the Parthenon (West pediment Q). The West pediment showed the mythical contest between Athena and Poseidon for supremacy over the land of Attica. The figure survives as part of a seated female figure. Only the legs, clad in a long chiton, survive. The figure wears sandals with thick soles but her toes are missing. At her side a part of a male thigh is visible. The figure has been identified as Oreithyia. Her sons stood on her side.
