  • Description

Gold ear stud. The outer edge of this particularly elaborate stud is formed from a corrugated gold strip which is soldered onto the upturned edge of the pan-like disc. The top rim bears a row of granules which, in at least two places, are attached to an inserted wire loop rather than being soldered in place. These loops may once have supported pendants. The decorated field of the disc bears concentric bands of beaded, plain and rope filigree and a frieze of palmettes (alternately circumscribed and uncircumscribed) in plain wire filigree. In the centre of the disc is an upright tubular pillar, over which are four tiers (perhaps more originally) of gold rings with radiating wires. The tiers bear, in turn, rosettes of six petals, rosettes of four petals, a gold granule and ivy leaves. The back stud is plain with a beaded wire border and an attachment loop, perhaps for a safety link to the front section, where the attachment loop is now missing. The tube on the back stud locates precisely into the tube on the reverse of the disc.

    Williams and Ogden 1994

Originally, the top of the central tube would have borne a rosette or other motif. Since such elements were often simply fixed in place by a tight push-fit, its loss is not surprising.
