- Description
-
Part of the fourth frieze, which surmounts the cella of the Nereid monument. It contains scenes of banqueting and sacrifice.
This slab shows a banquet scene. A bearded man, facing front, wearing a broad taenia, reclines on a couch with a cushion under his left elbow. He holds a rhyton, terminating in the forepart of a winged ibex, in his right hand. In his left hand he holds a bowl. He probably represents King Arbinas, depicted as an Oriental. An elderly, bearded man, standing near the head of the couch, whispers into his ear. There are three attendants: on the far left one carries a small bowl and a jug; the middle one extends his left hand to the right; the third extends his hand towards the rhyton. A dog lies beneath the couch. Three holes are visible where a cavity piece is missing.
