Red figured pottery hydria.
Design red on black ground. Round the lip, egg-moulding; on the neck, laurel-wreath; below the design, maeander and crosses.
Perseus at the court of Kepheus: On the right is Kepheus seated on an embroidered cushion above the level of the ground, his feet resting on a four-legged stool which stands on a base ornamented with laurel-wreath and maeander; he is bearded, with embroidered cap with engrailed ridge and lappets, himation, and lotos-sceptre in right hand. Before him on the level of the ground is Perseus looking up to right, beardless, with cap as Kepheus, embroidered bordered chlamys fastened in front, and winged endromides; in right hand the harpe, in left a spear. In the centre of the scene, between two Ionic columns, to each of which one of her arms is fastened, is Andromeda to left, with mitra, long chiton and himation, both embroidered; the columns have scroll patterns on the necking and acanthus-leaves round the base. On the left a female figure approaches, with long girt chiton and apoptygma reaching to the hips, and sandals, holding a hydria with right hand on her head, the mouth of which is in the form of a goose's head.
