- Curator's comments
- This photograph comes from a series of works titled 'The Ever Lasting Now' aiming to document the heritage of the old Balad area in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. In this photograph, Emy Kat returned to the house of Harry St. John 'Abdullah' Philby and documented it in its delapidated state, while emphasising the beauty in the remains. Kat's objective is to preserve the Hejaz heritage at this moment in time in the present state of decay, using notions of nostalgia and appreciation of beauty.
Kat asks the questions 'what happened to this heritage?' 'Why has it been neglected for so long?' and 'what can be done to preserve it?'
