Captain James Lowry, standing whole length on a seashore, directed very slightly to left, with head turned to right, glancilg towards the viewer; wearing finely embroidered naval costume, tricorne hat and sabre at his side; his left hand tucked into his waistcoat, the right holding his oaken cudgel with which he beat his crew, lettered 'Royal Oak Fore Mast'; at his fee, a log book, journal, compass and telescope attesting to his nautical career, and rope which he used to flog a sailor to death; two rowing boats approaching, ships behind. 1752
