- The identification of the figure as 18th century French smuggler Louis Mandrin is based on the annotation at the back, but the costume is Italian, and the portrait does not resemble usual representations of Mandrin.
The print is recorded in the department's acquisition register as a poster bill for some theatrical advertisement.
