What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Cast silver medal. Chased.(obverse) Bust of Don John of Austria facing left, bearded, wearing a cuirass ornamented with scales, the Order of the Golden Fleece, and a mantle knotted at the left shoulder and secured with a brooch on the right. Beaded border.
    (reverse) A rostral column, with Turkish arms at its base, surmounted by a statue of Don John, wearing antique armour and holding a baton in his right hand, being crowned by a flying Victory. In the background, a view of the battle of Lepanto.
