Curator's comments
Advertised in 'La Gazette de France' (28 February 1774), 'L'Avant-Coureur' (March 1774), 'Le Journal des Sciences et des Beaux arts) 'March 1774) and 'Mercure de France' (March 1774). A pair to 'Le Retour de Chasse', engraved by Duclos (IFF 180). On 16 October 1773, Marie-Antoinette was told that a wine-grower had been attacked by a stag, and that contrary to what had first transpired, the man was alive; his wife however did not believe it, so the Dauphine took it upon herself to go and tell the poor woman herself, and then took her to her husband in her own coach. The compassion of Marie Antoinette moved the population and the incident became a popular subject, featuring on snuff-boxes and marquetry of shell.
