What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

This is one from a series of sixteen etchings by Adriaen van der Laan, depicting caricatures of dwarves engaged in equestrian activities, for a complete set see 1941,0327.34-49. The impressions are pasted on sheets bound in a vellum album. The plates are lettered with Dutch verses below the image bound in a volume.
The figures in this series derive from a type called the 'Gobbi', for comment on this type see 1938,0617.12.1.
