What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Christ and the woman of Samaria: an arched print; Christ standing at left behind a well, a woman looking at Christ, holding a bucket resting on the edge of the well at centre, onlookers in landscape at right, city in the background; posthumous fourth state with two lines added above the pupil of Christ's left eye, the nose redrawn in one line and connected to his left eyebrow, the mouth strengthened, with the second signature and date on Christ's robe burnished away, before extensive rework restoring the shadow on the wall above the well. 1657-1658
