What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

For other (trimmed) impressions see also S.417 and F,6.107. For comment on the original print see F,6.106. The date (1616) is a mistake, since Drost's self-portrait was made around 1650; maybe 1661 meant?
For comment on the volume, which was published by Henri Louis Basan around 1810, see 1941,0327.11.1
