What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

New Hollstein (Rembrandt) lists this impression twice under second and third state. Because there is no illustration in the catalogue of these states, it is unclear which state this impression is. For impressions of the first state and comment see F,6.114.

For comment on the volume, which was published by Henri Louis Basan around 1810, see 1941,0327.11.1.
