- Nakagawa was born and works in Kanazawa city, a centre of metal inlay craft since the Edo period. Displayed in the Japanese Galleries are magnificent 17th century iron stirrups (1949,1212.1-2) inlaid with silver and mother of pearl from Kaga province. From 1974 Nakagawa studied the local ‘Kaga inlay’ (Kaga zōgan) technique under Takahashi Kaishū (1909-2005) and has gone on to teach at Kanazawa College of Arts. Nakagawa uses the technique to inlay copper and silver alloy (rōgin) into cast copper flower vases, imbuing them with a calm and restrained colour scheme. In 2004 the artist was designated a Living National Treasure by the Japanese Government for his ‘metal chasing’ (chokin) technique. The artist was one of five featured in the introductory section to the special exhibition ‘Crafting Beauty in Modern Japan’ held at the BM in 2007.
