What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Bibliography: This image relates to Durham's work in Balkans 1910-1913, a written account of which can be found in: Durham, M. E. 1914. "The struggle for Scutari (Turk, Slav and Albanian)". London: Edward Arnold.

    PicDoc 277: The Durham list in the associated PicDoc, compiled by George Sweatman (ca 1997), bears the inscription "? on ? Bejana".

    Production place: The Bojana or Buna River is a 41 km long river in Albania and Montenegro which flows into the Adriatic Sea. Albania is seemingly the place this photograph was taken as a series of photographs before and after this image were taken in Albania.
