What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Folio Collection: This drawing is bound in a folio consisting of a collection of drawings by Ellis Silas. The folio which consists of drawings catalogued as Oc2006,Drg.506 through to Oc2006,Drg.678, were bound by the British Museum in January 1967. In addition, two drawings which were originally bound in the folio were later removed, framed, and have been catalogued as Oc2006,Drg.679 and Oc2006,Drg.680.
