A beautifully produced photobook of life and local customs in these new additions to the Japanese empire. This book was presumably produced to encourage tourism or at least to assure the population at home that there was no conflict between to local population and the occupying forces. There is an overwhelming sense of tranquillity in these images which is of course partly false. 'Die Welt ist schön' (it’s a beautiful world) could be the subtitle of this book. Tanaka Kaoru (1898-1982) was a geographer as well as a photographer. No copy on OCLC. (Titus Boeder, 4/2007)
