Bowl with café au lait glaze
Bowls in this ogee-shaped outline and with this glaze are unusual and were first made in the Yongzheng period (AD 1723–35). This is one of a pair with A572. They are decorated in a café au lait glaze, so named because the colour is like a very milky coffee. Potters coloured this glaze using iron. Depending on its concentration, firing temperature and other conditions within the kiln, iron pigment added to a glaze can create a vast spectrum of colours. These range from black to red, from brown to yellow and even green. This bowl carries a Qianlong reign mark on its base.
