Porcelain dish with underglaze blue scrolling lotuses and phoenixes around sides and in the centre. Anhua decoration of two phoenixes painted lightly in slip on the cavetto. There is an inscription on the base.

Room 95 label text: PDF A613 Dish painted with phoenixes Potters painted this porcelain dish with underglaze blue scrolling lotuses and phoenixes in the centre and around the outside. In the cavetto is an 暗花 (anhua ‘secret or hidden decoration’) of raised slip, showing two phoenixes. The base has a Xuande mark in a double ring. Porcelain with underglaze cobalt-blue and anhua decoration Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province 江西省, 景德鎮 Ming dynasty, Xuande mark and period, AD1426–35
