Stem cup with three copper-red fruits
This stem cup is decorated with three fruits: a peach, a persimmon and a pomegranate in underglaze red. The three fruits symbolise the Three Abundances: long life, happiness and children. In the sixteenth century, mostly potters at Jingdezhen substituted underglaze copper-red with overglaze iron-red which was much easier to control and caused less wastage when completing imperial orders. Inside two dragons chasing a flaming pearl are incised into the walls and there is a Wanli reign mark in underglaze blue in a double ring inside the cup in the centre.
