Bowl with ladies engaged in cultural pursuits
This bowl is a very fine copy of a 15th century Ming porcelain bowl. It is beautifully painted with ladies in a terraced garden demonstrating their accomplishments. They are depicted in underglaze cobalt-blue admiring a painting, plucking the zither (guqin), playing weiqi (surround chess or go) and reading. Only ladies of a high social standing would have been trained in these arts.
