What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Dish painted with vases resting on lotus plants

Potters achieved a new purity of porcelain clay and a new delicacy in vessel shapes at the imperial kilns in the Chenghua era. Improvements were made in the preparation of the cobalt so that the underglaze blue designs appear more even than in earlier periods. The outside of this small dish is painted with vases (one of the Eight Buddhist Emblems) resting on lotus flowers. The base carries a Chenghua reign mark in a double rectangle.
