Export porcelain blue-and-white saucer
Sir Percival David bought very little European market export ware. This small saucer and the cup (PDF 648) are decorated with a European ship and the French inscription ‘Gardes vous de la syrene’ (Beware of the siren). In Greek legend sirens (mermaid-like creatures) lured sailors into dangerous waters by making enchanting sounds hoping to shipwreck them on the rocks.
