What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Box with floral scroll patterns and butterflies

This round porcelain box has a low domed cover and is decorated top and bottom with floral scroll patterns and with butterflies reserved in white with iron-red details against an overglaze iron– red ground. This style of decoration is an innovation of the Yongzheng reign but the pattern persisted in court orders throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. There is a six-character Yongzheng mark in a double circle in underglaze blue on the base.
