Room 95 label text: PDF A644 ‘Palace’ bowl with fruiting melon vines Officials, sent directly from the Chenghua emperor’s court, supervised the production of vessels in specified sizes with particular designs in pre-ordered quantities. Any vessels with mistakes in the motifs, any with inferior painting, and any surplus to the order were deliberately broken and buried. Archaeologists excavated similar melon vine bowls at the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen, dating from about AD 1482 to 1487. 瓜瓞綿綿 (guadie mianmian ‘large and small melons growing on curling vines’) symbolises a long line of male descendents and thus is an emblem of good wishes for the emperor.
