What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

‘Palace’ bowl with formal lotus flowers

This bowl is one of two types with formal lotus flowers. They are quite different in shape. This one has a much more rounded profile than the other (PDF B681). This bowl has a Chenghua mark enclosed by a double ring. This design was copied in highly stylised versions in several Qing dynasty reigns from the Kangxi period (AD 1662–1722) onwards.
