Room 95 label text: PDF A724 Dish with dragons In contrast to Europe, in China dragons are traditionally considered to be auspicious. They are regarded as the controllers of the water supply and ultimately came to symbolise imperial authority. The base has a six-character underglaze cobalt-blue Hongzhi reign mark. However, the enamels were probably added in the Republican period. Porcelain with incised decoration, underglaze cobalt-blue mark and overglaze green, yellow and aubergine enamels Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province Ming dynasty, Hongzhi mark and period, AD 1488–1505 (porcelain) (later enamelled)
