Bottle with brown, green and pale green glazes
Shiwan (pronounced Shekwan in Cantonese) 石灣 is located six kilometres southwest of the city centre of Foshan 佛山 in the Foshan municipality, in Nanhai county 南海縣 , twenty kilometres southwest of Guangzhou 廣州 in Guangdong province 廣東省 in Southern China. Although some rare pieces of Ming dynasty (1368-1644) date survive, the kilns flourished in the 18th to 19th centuries and Republican Period. At that time they were exporting to Southeast Asia, Europe and North America as well as making for the domestic market.
