What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Porcelain wine vessel in form of a pair of mandarin ducks, with female's head lying flat behind that of the drake. Decorated in wucai style with underglaze blue and overglaze green, red and yellow enamels. Water weeds and lotus leaves below the wings. In centre of female's back, a low neck with lid in form of a lotus seed pod. Spout formed by drake's beak. Base unglazed.

    Wucai wine ewer in the form of paired Mandarin ducks

    Potters decorated this wine ewer in a twice-fired technique called 五彩 (wucai ‘five colours’) composed of underglaze blue and overglaze red, yellow, and green. The duck's head lies flat behind the drake’s head. In the centre of the duck’s back is a cover in the form of a lotus seed pod. The spout is formed by the drake's beak. Pairs of mandarin ducks are an emblem of marital bliss.
