Room 95 label text: PDF A.779 Doucai ‘Grape stemcup‘ In common with the chicken cups, grape cups may derive their design from paintings. Grapes were used as a decorative motif on porcelain in the Yuan dynasty (AD 1279–1368) but this doucai design is different, being more subtle in its composition. The porcelain decorators attempted to lend liveliness to the design by colouring the grapes with shades of aubergine, using green for the foliage, yellow and red for the vines. Chenghua grape stemcups are smaller and more delicate than any other Chinese stemcups made previously. Copies of Chenghua chicken cups and grape cups have been made continuously from the sixteenth century to the present day.
