Pair of falangcai cups with lotus plants and poem
Formerly scholars called this type of top quality porcelains painted in the palace古月軒器 (Guyuexuan qi ‘Pavilion of the Ancient Moon wares’). Although the guyue seal appears on many pieces, these are now known as琺瑯彩 (falangcai ‘foreign colours’) wares as the colours are believed to have been introduced to China through foreign Jesuits some of whom worked in the Forbidden City. Such porcelains are of an exceptional quality and rarity, seldom seen outside the imperial collections of the Palace Museums in Beijing and Taipei.

Reason for treatment
Dismantle and restick, fill chips
Lots of heavy old restorations. Very heavily restored. Old bonda are dirty and slightly stained. Fills have yellowed, excess fills and edhesve material on original surface. Heavy surface abrasion on outside of heavily restored area, possibly from sand paper. Surface dirt.
Surface cleaned with a 50:50 solution of de-ionised water and Industrial methylated spirits (ethanol, methanol) applied on a cotton wool swab and dried with a paper towel. Dismantled object using Nitromors water soluble (methylene chloride,sodium hydroxide,cellulose), applied along joins with a brush and covered with tin foil to slow down evaporation of the solvent. Rinsed object with de-ionised water to remove Nitromors. Picked off softened epoxy resin with a scalpel under a microscope. Placed all pieces in a dessicator to loosen any remaining epoxy resin and removed with a scalpel. Allowed to dry before steam cleaning all break edges with de-ionised water. Dry bonded after drying with Magic self adhesive tape. Bonded joins with fresh Fynebond epoxy resin coloured slightly with titanium white dry ground pigment. Gap filled with Fynebond which was bulked heavily with Aerosil 805 fumed silica and coloured with artists' dry ground pigments. Retouched gap fill with Golden acrylic paints. Object was further cleaned with a 50:50 solution of de-ionised water and Industrial methylated spirits (ethanol, methanol) applied on a cotton wool swab and dried with a paper towel.
