What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Model of a duck

In 1908, both Cixi and the Guangxu emperor died, Puyi then aged two suceeded them. His regency was unstable and on 12th February 1912, the last emperor, the five-year old child Pu Yi (AD1906-1967) was forced to abdicate and a Republic was established. This model of a duck was made during the Republican era. It has a pale stoneware body which has been slip painted to look like Yixing ware.
