Vase with turquoise glaze
This porcelain bottle is coated with an opaque turquoise glaze coloured with copper. It has an apocryphal Yongzheng reign mark on the base. This vase was part of a collection of single-coloured porcelains given by Mountstuart Elphinstone (AD 1871–1957) just before the opening of the Percival David Foundation in 53 Gordon Square, London, in 1952. Like David, Elphinstone was a noted collector and member of the Oriental Ceramic Society. Much of Elphinstone’s porcelain collection is believed to have been damaged as the result of its packing straw catching fire.
